Appearance: Johan is rather tall and has broad shoulders, both of which tell of European blood quite well. His hair is unruly and rather messy and striking with both its unique celadon hue and wild bangs. His green, cut-glass eyes are clear, wide, and warm. The thin eyebrows that touch close to his eyelids give him a smug and amused air that is often accentuated by his wide smile. Though he is quite lean, he has a notably toned physique. This little fact is downplayed, however, by both the crop and flounces of the shirt he wears most of the time. Though this shirt is sometimes white, it has on occasion appeared in a light shade of lavender. Over his shirt he almost always wears a cropped blue vest with a high, lain back collar and black piping. His pants are black with vertical purple strips running along the front. He wears white boots that are covered by brown gaiters that are secured on top and at the sides by buckles. The side buckles are decorated by red, glass ornaments.

Johan is often smiling. His complexion is not too pale or too tan, suggesting that he spends at least some time out in the sun.

Personality: Johan is a rather amiable person. He appears to be pleasantly superficial at times, but is actually much more profound that most people give him credit for. He is vaguely philosophical and, at least, is more inclined to deep though than his friend and-alleged clone Juudai. He is also very observant without being overly patient or passive. Rather, he can gauge the situation before immediately acting. As for his the extent of his understanding and abilities of observation, he can easily read a duel if his mind is clear and he is not caught up in the moment. However, if he gets an idea in his head he will carry it out. He does not care t if it is socially unacceptable or conventional. To some extent at least, he does not care how it may affect others.

But for all his open, candid nature, he also has a streak of secrecy, which more or less reflects on his judgment of someone's character and ability. If he believes that someone will not understand his goal, he will not bother telling them. Though, on less personal topics he will say bizarre things on occasion and is not bothered if someone does not understand what he means. Instead he seems to appreciate that the best way to leave an impression and get someone to think is by being earnestly abnormal. By the same coin, he is also able to clearly and easily deliver his intentions and ideas. He would probably be a good leader if his methods were not so strange. Also, when he sees the brokenness and disconnect between people and spirits, or anything else, really, he feels that it is his job to lead a repairing change.

Johan is a bit of a spazz, which results from him being able to easily get caught up in a moment or idea.

Johan is a rather tactile person, and appears to have no qualms or reserves about touching or supporting someone if need be. And whether it is significant or not, he seems to have a thing for holding shoulders. And in particular, he seems to steady Juudai by the shoulders a lot. But rather than from a romantic feeling, this quirk of his most likely arises from his raw passion and desire to influence people. By physically reaching out to them he can actually touch them.

Particulars: Dueling: This guy can duel. Very well, in fact. And not just because of his one-of-a-kind Gem Beast deck. His ability in innate, and even Pegasus J. Crawford recognised it. According to him, the man who created modern Duel Monsters, Johan is the fourth top duellist in the world. And, considering how many duellists there are, that is quite a high rank.

Spirits: Johan is sensitive to duel spirits. He can see and commune with them, not just his own but any other duellist's as well. He has had this ability since he was young, and was probably born with it. Though why he has this ability is not clear. Regardless, he greatly enjoys it and even counts the spirits of the Gem Beasts as his family.

Ruby Carbuncle: A duel spirit and one of the Gem Beasts who Johan sees as his family. Johan has nicknamed her “Ruby” out of affection. She talks to him often, and though she only says the syllables of her name Johan seems to be able to understand her quite well. She has an exquisite sense of direction which makes up for Johan's apparent lack of one. Also, the red orb on the end of her tail can be looked through to see the true nature of things, things such as energy and entities which might be invisible to the naked eye. She resembles a squirrel, which Juudai initially thought she was.

Gem Beasts: Johan's deck. A set of one-of-a-kind cards. There are seven beasts for each colour of the rainbow as well as the Ultimate Gem God Rainbow dragon, which can act as a bridge between dimensions and transport large amount of masses between the places. Johan was given them because they would only accept him as their user.
